What is distance education?
Open learning and distance education are interchangeable terms. Therefore, we can combine them and form a new term known as open and distance learning- ‘ODL’. Open learning is a dream which can be achieved through distance education for they complement each other. There are various teaching methods which are covered under distance education. Here, the teacher and student can be connected through the teaching and learning process though they are separated by time and space.

Method of learning
Here, the learning takes place without being physically present in a classroom as in the case of the traditional mode of learning process. Various media resources including CD-ROMs, audio video clips, radio, satellite, television or
printed material are delivered to the students through post at their doorstep. Therefore, the curriculum is transferred to the student through self-study method. This mode of teaching and learning requires self-learning by the student as per the guidelines. This process includes the different transactions of knowledge without taking the regular classes.

Communication between the teacher and student
The students and teachers can communicate with each other through telephonic or interactive chats or emails and it also includes postal correspondence. There are some classes held where face to face interaction takes place that are held at the study centres. The student gets the flexibility over time and place of study and also over the method of learning . He/ she can choose the combination of courses as per their interest. When the restrictions are less, the freedom to acquire is more. Here in this system of open learning, education is provided to the students without any restriction or inequality.

Due to the planned methodology and less restrictions in the process of admissions, the students of different categories can enrol themselves into these types of educational programs. Therefore, we can say that ODL has been based on openness using the distance mode of learning

Why is ODL special?
India has the highest gross enrolment ratio in the ODL method of higher education as India is a highly populated country ODL makes it very easily available to all the candidates and meets the educational demand of the people who are unable to enrol with regular colleges.

The objectives of distance education system are as follows:
To provide education to the people who belong to the disadvantaged group of the society. To provide education to the people who live remotely; to the people who are working and wish to pursue higher education.
To provide education with flexible timings and also flexibility in the mode of learning and the duration of courses as well as combination of courses. There is a lot of flexibility seen in the eligibility criteria and age of enrolment.
To upgrade the candidates’ skills so as to be settled in a career.
To provide education to the people throughout their life so as to enable them to
acquire knowledge at all ages.
